Restoration can be part of an accountability process for settler-colonialism. European colonizers and their descendants effected genocides of peoples, cultures, plants, animals and microorganisms. By planting indigenous plants we support soils, insects, animals, and communities that coexisted for generations.
I don't think plant restoration can make up for harms, nor is it enough to shift the paradigm that continues to devastate. I do think plant restoration and gardening in general can be utilized to examine power and control, personally and systematically. And from there we will inevitably find ourselves committed to more than digging up blackberries and planting salal.
